'Once you are in the SEA program, there seems to be unlimited support and resources available, all of which are greatly needed and appreciated when preparing your business plan. There is a wonderful opportunity to learn from established professionals who are currently working in their field of expertise. These professionals came in to teach you the best practices in their respective industries. The support of other small business owners who are also starting their own businesses creates a set of fans and a sense of camaraderie right from the start. Lot of opportunities to learn through workshops throughout the year, at all of the BERN locations.' Angela Findlay, The Blue Room Hair Salon, Barrie
'I cannot express my gratitude enough to this program and the people running it. You all have been a tremendous help to me and I look forward to the future." Rob Imbeault, Mother Nature Seasonal Care, Wasaga Beach

What is the Assistance?
Participants
currently receive financial assistance of $423 a week for the duration
of the Ontario Self Employment Benefit (OSEB) program agreement (42 weeks)
to assist them with their basic living allowance.*
During
the OSEB agreement period, participants are involved in two distinct
phases:
Phase
I: Business Plan Development (10 weeks)
Phase II: Business Implementation (32 weeks)
During
the Business Plan Development phase, participants take part in seminars
and workshops designed to help them work through their business
concept by helping them:
- understand key business
concepts and apply them to their businesses
- research all aspects
of their own business, and
- write an effective
business plan that will guide them through the start-up and implementation
of the business
Participants
who provide a completed business plan and are approved, continue
on to the Business Implementation Phase of the OSEB/SEA program.
The Business Implementation
phase focuses on the start-up and operation of the business. Throughout
this phase participants continue to attend workshops focusing on
practical information to help them meet the challenges of starting
and running their business. Other ongoing business development is
supported through regular meetings, a tradeshow, a small business
conference, and on-site support through a site visit.
